Reading Charts Worked in Rows

Charts worked in rows are worked from the bottom of the chart upwards and are worked across one row, then the piece is turned and worked back in the other direction. On each alternate row you will be working across the front (right side) of the design and then back across the back (wrong side) of the design.

The directional arrows indicate in which direction you will be working for each row.

Simple Filet Crochet Chart

For this simple filet crochet chart, the 'Start Here' Arrow indicates the starting point of the design.

First we need to crochet a row of starting chains, in this chart there are 40 chains.

Row 1 - working across the front of the design, starting or turning ch-3 (counts as 1 dc), **ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next ch**, repeat from ** to ** 12 more times, the final dc will be worked into the first chain stitch.

Row 2 - starting or turning ch-3 (counts as 1 dc), turn your work and now working across the back of the design, **ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc**, repeat from ** to ** 2 more times, 2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc, **ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc**, repeat from ** to ** 2 more times, ch 2 , sk 2, 1 dc in third ch of starting ch-3 of previous row.

Row 3 - starting or turning ch-3 (counts as 1 dc), turn your work and now working across the front of the design, **ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next ch**, repeat from ** to ** 1 more time, 2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc, **ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc**, repeat from ** to ** 2 more times, **ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc**, repeat from ** to ** 1 more time, ch 2 , sk 2, 1 dc in third ch of starting ch-3 of previous row.

Row 4 - starting or turning ch-3 (counts as 1 dc), turn your work and now working across the back of the design, ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc, **2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc**, repeat from ** to ** 1 more time, **ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc**, repeat from ** to ** 2 more times, 2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc, **ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc**, repeat from ** to ** 2 more times, 2 dc in the 2 ch space of previous row, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, sk 2 chains, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2 , sk 2, 1 dc in third ch of starting ch-3 of previous row.
